The Only Good

The only good studio

I was just banging on the piano, and started singing this like I was Buddy Holly. I thought I had finally written my first four-chord song (instead of the usual eight). But whenever I played the chorus on the piano, I couldn’t stop a finger adding a note to each of its two chords. My subconscious demanded more chords, I guess. The song really got its ska on when I rearranged it, adding trumpet and trombone for the band I was in. Alas, I only have one rough, live recording of the fuller version. This is the simpler, demo version.

Dropped out of Sunday school
Never measured with no golden rule
The only good I wanna be’s to you-hou-ou
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Never studied for big exams
Or answered questions with polite “Yes, ma’ams”
The only things I pass are notes to you-hou-ou
Put down your book and…

CHORUS
Slide across the upholstery
And sail with me on a truant sea
Take the wheel; you can be my guest
I never really passed the driver’s test

Haven’t clapped erasers yet
Only gerbils are the teacher’s pet
The only class that matters is in you-hou-ou
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Fed reports to rabid dogs
Busted educators copping snogs
The only subject that I study’s you
Open that book and…

CHORUS

Dropped out of Sunday school
Never measured with no golden rule
The only good I wanna be’s to you-hou-ou
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Never studied for big exams
Or answered questions with polite “Yes, ma’ams”
The only things I pass are notes to
The only subject I adore is
The only good I wanna be’s to you
I wanna be with you
I wanna be with you
I wanna be with you
